WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU?

With the advent of Carbon Taxing the area of energy efficiency in buildings has become more and more prominent. This is not only in relation to the Green initiative with regard to feeling better about ourselves, but because now this is an area which is directly affecting the cost of running a building, whether a residential home, or a large office building. This is further accentuated by the recent economic downturn, and is high lighting how lax our energy efficiency has been in building up until now.

 We have found energy savings of the order of 35% on annual costs, on buildings which are only 4 years old. This is a dramatic saving, and not only that, the payback periods are largely between 1-3 years. There are many reasons for this, but the main reason was that in boom times, we were not so concerned about the running costs of buildings we built, as for the most part energy efficiency was only a marketing tool, and in most cases it wasn't necessary for sales & lettings. This has been accentuated by the recent advances in certain technologies, which now means that there are dramatic savings to be achieved in some buildings, by undertaking relatively small works.

 These savings, are not only relating to the commerical sector, but also in the residential sector. Pre the new building regulations, there was very little in them which prescribed for real energy efficiency. There were minimum values for the allowed heat loss rates through walls, windows and roofs etc, but there was little recognition that if you had massive ventilation through your home by way of a chimney, or passive ventilation opening, it meant that you were constantly heating a stream of air that flowed through your house, instead of heating your house once and retaining that heat. There have been so many advances in the past few years in terms of the technology available, and the ability to assess and improve such houses, that finding 35% savings is the norm, as opposed to the exception.
